Ways to Use Frozen Bananas

Updated: May 10, 2020

Bananas are a great source of potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. However, I simply cannot eat them on their own.The texture and smell of bananas is hard for me to get around, but I always wanted to like them because of their health benefits. I came up with a few recipes to hide bananas in a ice cream, smoothies, and chocolate treats. If you're interested in ways you can use frozen bananas, continue reading below!

The first step is freezing your bananas. Grab a bundle of ripe bananas. Use bananas that are fully yellow or yellow with brown spots. Unripe bananas are less sweet and will add an unwanted earthy taste to these recipes, but overly ripe bananas will be too sweet and mushy. Peel your bananas and cut them into small circles. Place them in a freezer safe bag, put them in the freezer overnight, and they will be ready to use! Frozen bananas last for about 6-8 months in the freezer.

1. Banana “Nice” Cream

A dairy-free and healthier alternative to ice cream. This "nice" cream is still thick and creamy, and you can flavor it however you would like. Mix frozen bananas and flavorings of your choice in a blender or food-processor. Freeze mixture for an additional 30 minutes and enjoy! Here are my favorite banana “nice” cream recipes (makes one serving only).

Double Chocolate 1 cup frozen bananas 1 tbsp cocoa powder 1 tsp vanilla ¼ cup chocolate chips

Salted Caramel 1 cup frozen bananas 2 tbsp caramel sauce ¼ tsp salt

Mint Chocolate Chip

1 cup frozen bananas

1 tsp mint extract

¼ cup chocolate chips

Coconut

1 cup frozen bananas

1 tsp coconut extract

¼ cup shredded coconut

2. Chocolate Banana Treats

These chocolate banana snacks are healthy way to cure that sweet tooth. To make, simply melt chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave and dip frozen banana in. Freeze for 1 hour and enjoy! You can also take peanut butter, sandwich it between two frozen banana pieces, cover in melted chocolate, and freeze for one hour. You can also try this with frozen strawberries.

3. Smoothies + Protein Shakes

Frozen bananas are a great way to thicken up smoothies, smoothie bowls, and protein shakes. Try the recipes below or be creative and make something new!

Acai / Pitaya Bowl

1 cup frozen bananas

1 frozen acai or pitaya packet

¼ cup frozen blueberries

¼ cup frozen mango

1 cup mango juice or nectar

Granola, shredded coconut, honey, chia seeds, and fruit for topping

Peanut Butter Banana Protein Shake

1 cup frozen bananas

1 cup almond milk

2 tbsp peanut butter

1 serving protein powder
